Skeletal Muscles of the Fetal Pig

Today in class we continued work on our fetal pig dissection:
Goals for today include:
* Finish skinning pig
* Participate in skeletal muscle dissection demonstration
* Begin cleaning off the connective tissues and fat tissues of pig, and start teasing out required skeletal muscles on your pig
* Work through Day 2: Skeletal muscle lab


Extra Credit Opportunity!
- Come in and spend 20 minutes of your lunch period working on your pig to receive up to 5pts extra credit

Begin Fetal Pig Dissection

Today in class we:
- Received fetal pigs for dissection project
- Today's goals include:
* Identify external anatomy of the pig
* Determine sex of your pig
* Skin your pig
* Work through Lab 1 of pig dissection

Cardiovascular Test

Today in class we tested on the cardiovascular system

Blood Vessels

Today in class:
- Read chapter 14 section on blood vessels
- Identify anatomy of arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins
- Describe physiologic functions of various blood vessels in body

- 3 labs are due on Friday: Cardiac Cycle, Heart Rate and Blood Pressure, Heart Structure Labs

Heart Dissection

Today in class we:
Worked on sheep heart dissection: identification of external and internal structures, identify blood flow in through vessels and heart chambers.

- heart rate, cardiac cycle and heart anatomy labs

Blood Pressure and Heart Rate Lab

Define systole and diastole.
Describe or diagram the events of the cardiac cycle

Cardiac Cycles

Today in class we:
Discussed the electrical and mechanical conductions of the heart:
- Electrical impulses conducted through specialized tissues or nodes from SA node through the AV node, Bundle of His, Left and Right Bundle branches, Purkinje fibers
- Mechanical contraction of the heart, or cardiac cycle, is produced from alternating systole and diastole contractions of the atria and ventricles. This rhythms are influenced by electrical impulses and changes in chamber pressure.
